Maximilian Prag’s artistic contribution manifests itself in a poster that is not only part of the exhibition but at the same time serves as a means of promotion. This effectively questions the relationship between art and design. Already in 1900, the idea of a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) aimed at evening out this relationship. The artist draws on layouts, typographies, and subjects from Koloman Moser, Art Nouveau, and the Wiener Werkstätte, seeking connections to current graphic ways of expression. The work merges these styles with modern techniques and a contemporary understanding of past graphic works.
Challenging the arbitrary separation of art and design, the exhibition poster becomes part of the exhibition itself, displayed as artwork as well as promotion. Through finding reference in graphic elements in layout, typography and sujets of Koloman Moser, Jugendstil and Wiener Werkstätte to today’s graphical styles and their similarities. The work marries the stylistics together in modern techniques and from a contemporary understanding of the past graphical work displayed in Wien 1900.
